Introduction to English 101
INTRODUCING ENGLISH 101
This course is designed to prepare students for 7 achievement standards (AS)
Achievement Standards
Achievement Standards have 3 different pass levels:
a pass ( = Achieved)
a very good pass ( = Achieved with Merit)
an excellent pass ( = Achieved with Excellence)
The different pass levels you reach are shown on the results sheet you get from NZQA.
Any pass in any standard means that you gain all of the credits attached to that standard.
The Level 1 Literacy requirement is 10 credits.
INTERNAL STANDARDS CreditsAS1.4 Produce Creative Writing 3
AS1.5 Produce Formal Writing 3
AS1.9 Use information literacy skills to form conclusions 4
AS1.10 Form personal responses to independently read texts, supported by
evidence 4
EXTERNAL STANDARDS
AS1.1 Show understanding of specified aspects of a studied written text with supporting evidence 4
AS1.2 Show understanding of specified aspects of a studied visual or oral
text with supporting evidence 4
As 1.3 Show understanding of significant aspects of unfamiliar written texts
through close reading, with supporting evidence 4
TOTAL CREDIT VALUE OF COURSE = 26 credits (29 if Speech is achieved)
NOTE: 101 Course 2011 - students will not be assessed on AS1.6 (Speech) as part of their programme, as it was done in Year 10. There will however, be an opportunity for students to present a speech to improve their mark from 2010. This will be on Thursday March 10th. 101 teachers will support these students with planning and writing their speeches and Ms Wall will organise the re-sits. AS 1.6 (Speech) is worth 3 credits.
HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY CHANCES OF SUCCESS IN THIS COURSE?
• I can use dividers to organise my folder
• I can carefully file all the handouts I am given.
• I can do my homework
• I can ask for help when I need it
• I can keep an eye on the approximate calendar so I know what’s coming up
